Sex comes faster for couples who text

More than 1,200 of the magazines' readers answered an online "Sex in the Digital Age" questionnaire.

One surprising fact: nearly 80 percent of women said their relationships lead to sex more quickly because it was so easy for them to stay connected to their beaus. Meanwhile, 58 percent of men said flirting on Facebook, G-chat and texting helped them become intimate sooner.

"Just the fact that this gadget with a few smiley-face emoticons and some barely legible, flirty sentences have led more couples to have sexual intercourse faster is fascinating," says Belisa Vranich, a clinical psychologist and life coach who's a contributor to Shape.

By the time people get to their second and third dates, many feel they've done all the requisite dating they are supposed to do to get to know each other via texting, says Vranich. Texting provides the attention, the emotional connection and the sense of togetherness — however abbreviated — that is often needed before someone feels comfortable enough to have sex, Vranich says.
